It’s clear Vin Diesel cares deeply for Furious 7. At SXSW, he called the project “a labor of love” and teared up when he talked about his deceased castmate/friend Paul Walker. Still, it’s safe to say the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences won’t share Diesel’s feelings.
Diesel thinks otherwise, though. In a profile story he did with Variety, the action star mentioned his big predictions for the year’s first blockbuster: “Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history. It will probably win Best Picture at the Oscars — unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant.”
This could be just Diesel being the affable promoter he’s been these past few weeks. If it isn’t, this is wishful thinking. The Academy has traditionally looked away from blockbusters like the Fast & Furious series when considering Best Picture candidates. This doesn’t take away from how good the recent entries have been; Furious 7 has received solid reviews. It’s just how the Oscars work. How else do you explain how a film as great as Guardians of the Galaxy (which Diesel also starred in) gets looked over for a film as average as American Sniper (yeah, I said it)?
But forget the Oscars. Furious 7 has skydiving cars. You’ll get to see that on April 3.
