Comedian Amber Ruffin will no longer be hosting this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, just two months after being announced as the event’s featured entertainer. The decision follows public criticism of Ruffin’s remarks about the Trump administration and her refusal to tone down her jokes.

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) released a statement on March 29 confirming the change. “The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year,” WHCA President Eugene Daniels wrote, per Politico. He emphasized that the focus of the event should be on celebrating journalism and supporting the next generation of reporters rather than on divisive politics.

The announcement came just one day after White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich attacked Ruffin on social media. In a post on X, Budowich called her a “2nd rate comedian” and criticized her recent comments about the administration. In an interview, Ruffin had expressed frustration over requests to make her speech politically balanced, responding, “There’s no way I’m going to be freaking doing that, dude. Under no circumstances.” She also made a pointed remark, saying, “You’re kind of a bunch of murderers,” which some took as a jab at government policies.

Budowich questioned the credibility of journalists attending the event, writing, “What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this? More importantly, what kind of company would sponsor such a hate-filled and violence-inspiring event?”

The move to drop Ruffin also comes after her recent jokes on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she mocked the Trump administration’s controversial attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, as reported by Politico.

Neither Ruffin nor the WHCA has publicly responded to the controversy. The annual dinner, set for April 26 at the Washington Hilton, will now proceed without a comedic performance, a break from the event’s long-standing tradition.
