Indianapolis Man Convicted for Attempted Burglaries in Greenwood

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind.–An Indianapolis man was sentenced to three years in prison this week for attempted burglaries that investigators say he committed in Greenwood in September 2024.
19-year-old Javanta Phillips was convicted on two counts of attempted burglary and resisting law enforcement.
On September 14, 2024, Greenwood Police say they were told about someone trying to burglarize Atkinson Firearms just after 4:30 am. At about 5 am the next day, an officer says he found Phillips and three other people wearing black masks and long sweatsuits at the front of the Outdoorsman Sport Shop and trying to get inside.
Once the cops activated their lights, they say Phillips and the other three ran back to their vehicle and drove away, which caused a chase. Greenwood Police say they caught and arrested all of them with the help of IMPD.
At the time of these incidents, investigators say Phillips had just been released from the Marion County Jail on bond for two felony cases. He has two felony cases pending in Marion County at this time.
Restitution in the amount of $6,000 was also ordered for the benefit of Atkinson Firearms.
“Here is yet another out of county criminal caught attempting to prey on our citizens and going to spend years in prison for his effort,” Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner said. ” I hope they get the message we’re sending.”
