Following a winter that was colder than average and snowier than average (and don’t forget that miserable ice storm), comes spring!

People have been wearing shorts and putting the top down on their rides since Wednesday. And Thursday was a freakishly warm 74 :)

But today’s the official start of spring…Woo-Woo!

Meteorologists say it’ll be an average spring for temperatures and rain. That means we’re in for a nice few months, made better because they come on the heels of a tough winter.

Normal highs this time of year are around 51 degrees, with normal lows around 32. In early April, temperatures typically rise to 58 degrees and by late April, 68.

After that, things just keep getting better, with average highs reaching 79 by June 1. That’s what I’m talkin bout!

Spring’s only downside is precipitation. Normally, it’s Indianapolis’ wettest season, said John Hendrickson of the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, with both May and June averaging more than 4 inches of rain (March and April each get about 31/2 inches).

But life is full of trade-offs: Rain is necessary for flowers to grow.

Wildflowers haven’t turned up yet, but on Monday the folks at Indianapolis Downtown Inc. plan to take matters into their own hands by planting 10,000 annuals, mostly pansies and snapdragons, in about 200 planters throughout Downtown.
