You think today’s politicians are bad? Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Bill Clinton, even Ted Kennedy’s past looks angelic compared to the “life and times” of former DC Mayor, Marion Barry. I didn’t move into the District until well after the new millenium and after Barry’s reign as Mayor. He served as Mayor TWO times and the second was after he was caught with drugs. He was elected in 1979 and served until 1991 and then again from 1995-1999. However, the ex-Mayor’s dark, and often hilarious, past antics are well known outside of the “AREA”. I quickly learned that although Barry’s past as a politician is full of sex, drugs, and fraud, Washingtonian’s have an odd level of loyalty to this guy. He now serves as a member of the Council of The District of Columbia, but please believe his antics still continue.
Well, STRONG rumor has it that HBO is gearing up to create a biopic of the sketchy politician and that they are tapping Oscar nominee, Eddie Murphy to play Barry. HBO released a documentary, “The 9 Lives of Marion Barry” at the HBO Theatre in 2009.
Do you guys think is Eddie Murphy the best fit? I’ve heard several names thrown around in the past such as Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock.
Would you guys be interested in seeing a film about the troubled politician’s life? I think I am!!
