Drill Reaches Trapped Chilean Miners

A drill has reached the chamber where 33 Chilean miners have been trapped for more than two months.

Rescue workers jumped for joy as the drill pushed through the last inches of the shaft. Relatives of the miners ran up the side of the hill above the mine waving Chilean flags.

Engineers on the surface are planning to lower a slender, cylindrical capsule down the shaft to withdraw the trapped miners one by one. However, it’ll still take days to bring the miners to the surface one at a time.

Boring holes have allowed rescue personnel to give the miners food, water, supplies and fresh air to keep them alive as they worked on the rescue shaft.  The trapped miners have also had to lose weight in order to fit inside the rescue capsule that will take them to the surface.
