JJ’s Blog: Mommas in School
Since I have posted on Facebook and Twitter that I am attending IUPUI many people have been asking “JJ, what are you taking up in school?” Well, I am actually finishing up my degree. I left the University of Cincinnati during my 4th year of school to move to New York City. I honestly never considered going back to school because you don’t really need a degree to be a radio personality. Hell I made it to NYC without the question ever popping up. You certainly don’t make more money as a radio personality because of a degree either. It’s more about who you know and what skills you have. I have been a radio personality since I was 16 (a couple of years ago *wink wink*) so it was tough convincing myself to stay in school for something I was already doing. However, I decided last year that I wanted to complete my degree before my daughter starts school. Not only did I want to challenge myself but I also wanted to show my daughter the importance of education.
I just started school last week and can’t even tell you how excited I am. I am in the process of learning discipline all over again with one extra big factor…a child. Yesterday I set up the playroom with snacks, paint and playdoh for my daughter and then I went on to study. I would study for an hour then play with her for a half hour. Then start all over again. I think the hardest part is trying not to ignore my baby girl. Several times while studying she had trouble opening things or couldn’t find something. Keep in mind she is four going on 24! For the most part she stayed in the playroom listening to music and making a mess! She would always whisper when she asked for something because I explained that mommy needed her to be quiet for a while.
I totally forgot how studying makes you tired! There was no way that I could cook last night so we ordered pizza and watched a movie before bed. Today I was more prepared! CROCKPOT MEAL!!!! Whoever invented the Crockpot has love for us mommas! Now I made sure that dinner is ready by the time I get home and it is healthy! *throws hand up in the air* ALL I DO IS WIN!!
Being a single mom in school is not easy however I would also like to acknowlege the married moms out there that are in school! Sometimes I feel like it is more challenging for you. Not only do you have kids that need attention but being a wife is a whole nutha job!!! My hats off to all of you moms who have decided to go back to school! Best of luck! Once you get your degree be sure to email me a picture! You are my role models!
