Fire Fighters are alerting Indianapolis residents living in the Massachusetts Avenue area to remain in their homes after five man covers exploded in the area.

Fire crews tell us Station 13 was dispatched to the 400 block of Massachusettes Avenue around 6:30 Sunday morning for reports of a gas odor. They arrived at the scene just moments before they witnessed the first man cover’s explosion at the corner of Indianapolis Massachusetts avenue and New Jersey street.

Fire crews at Station 7, located on the corner of Mass avenue and North Street told crews they were sleeping when the explosion shook their beds and woke them up.

Within moments four more man covers exploded, one left a large crater in the road.

Indianapolis Power and Light told us crews performed preliminary searches around 7 Sunday morning and reported no outages.

No one was injured in the explosions. Indianapolis Fire Fighters ask for residents to not venture out of their homes.

If you’re traveling downtown expect delays as westbound Michigan street at East street is closed, as well as the intersection at Mass avenue and New Jersey street and the intersection at Mass avenue and North street.
