No. 7 MSU shocks No. 4 Baylor 42-41 in Cotton Bowl

The Michigan State Spartans won the 2015 Cotton Bowl Thursday afternoon, 42-41.

Connor Cook threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Keith Mumphery with 17 seconds left to cap a three-touchdown, fourth-quarter comeback in No. 7 Michigan State’s 42-41 victory over playoff-snubbed Baylor on Thursday in the Cotton Bowl.

The Spartans’ winning touchdown came after Marcus Rush blocked a Baylor field goal with just more than a minute left.

When No. 4 Baylor got the ball back for one last try, Bryce Petty was sacked on consecutive plays before Riley Bullough’s clinching interception.

Petty completed 36 of 51 passes for a Cotton Bowl-record 550 yards and three touchdowns, two to speedy freshman KD Cannon and the other to 390-pount backup guard LaQuan McGowan that put Baylor up 41-21 late in the third quarter.

Jeremy Langford ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns for the 11-2 Spartans, whose only losses were to playoff teams Oregon and Ohio State.

The victims, a man and woman, later identified as 29-year-old Ernest Harding and 24-year-old Tierra Williams, were getting into a minivan in the 4000 block of University Place when suspects in another vehicle arrived, got out and opened fire.

Officers found multiple shell casings around the driveway from more than one firearm. Police are not sure how many shooters may have been involved.

The door windows were completely shot out from gunfire.

The suspects pulled up in an unknown white vehicle,” said Capt. Darin Szilagy. “The suspects approached the mini van, fired several rounds. Two of the passengers of the van were hit.”

In speaking to neighbors, FOX 2 was told that 12 shots were heard initially. After a pause, about seven more shots could be heard.

Afterward, a woman with two children were escorted from the house by police. The woman could be seen crying

Grosse Pointe police heard shots and first to arrive and secured the scene, located near Mack Avenue.

Police were going door to door to get witness statements, but details are sketchy including what kind of vehicle was used as well as the number of suspects.

This is the second fatal shooting to occur on the east side in recent weeks. Paige Stalker, 16, was killed when she and three other teens were shot at Charlevoix and Phillip in Detroit Dec. 22.

Tierra’s family has set up a Gofundme.com page at http://gofundme.com/jjz7g0.
