In May of 2014, the New York Daily News ran a story about New York Yankees’ third baseman Alex Rodriguez and his relationship to an alleged DEA informant named Desiree Perez. The report claimed Perez was advising Rodriguez in the Biogenesis case that ultimately resulted in Rodriguez being suspended for 162 games. The report also claimed Perez was “a Manhattan nightclub manager with a lengthy criminal record and close links to hip-hop mogul Jay Z,” and described her as having “a long and wild history as a DEA cooperating witness and then a fugitive.”
When Sway Calloway brought up the subject of his relationship with Jay Z, fellow Roc-A-Fella co-founder, Damon Dash, referenced the allegations of a relationship between Perez and Jay Z.
“This is the one time that the paper did scared me, and I was like, ‘It has to be some truth to it,’” Dash said during an interview with Sway In The Morning. “I read about his affiliation with an informant…that he’s in business with certain people. It’s tricky for me to say, but just based on where I’m from, I can’t have nothing to do with that.”
Dash pointed out the contentious relationship between his peers Irv Gotti, Kareem “Biggs” Burke and different federal agencies. In 2012, Roc-A-Fella co-founder Burke was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted for conspiring to distribute more than 100 kilos of marijuana. Gotti was the target of a three-year federal money laundering investigation beginning in 2003.
