Protests in Baltimore over Freddie Gray

Baltimore citizens will not learn anytime soon from police how 25-year-old Freddie Gray died in officers’ custody earlier this month. Police said Wednesday that findings of their internal investigation would not be made public, according to NBC News.

The news comes after Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts earlier this week set a Friday deadline to file the report with state investigators, leading to expectations among activists and Gray’s family that more details about his death from a spinal injury would come to light, writes the television news station.

From NBC News:

Baltimore police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk said Wednesday night that the report would remain sealed to protect the integrity of the inquiry. He said Batts’ deadline was his way of “saying we were going to move with a sense of urgency.”

Kowalczyk said he understood that “as we’ve gotten closer to that date, the concern and the questions have begun to build up.” But he said on MSNBC-TV’s “The Last Word”: “There is evidence that has to be preserved, so we have tried to find the balance of releasing as much information as we can. For us right now, it’s about conducting an accurate, timely investigation.”

The most important thing, he said, is to ensure that “the evidence is saved for any kind of prosecution that may or may not happen.”

Batts’ turnabout comes amid allegations that suggest Gray was trying to injure himself, according to a prisoner who accompanied Gray in the police van, the Washington Post reports.

The timing of the prisoner’s leaked claim is suspicious in and of itself and should not detract from questions about why police failed to provide an obviously injured Gray with medical treatment after his arrest. Police should be open and transparent with Gray’s family, activists, and other citizens who want answers about his death.
