On bended knee. Unanimously. This is how the Indiana Fever team started its WNBA playoff run at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The team, set to play the Phoenix Mercury at home took a knee Wednesday night during the National Anthem, supporting NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s movement. Joining them, according to the Indianapolis Star, were two players from the Mercury, Mistie Bass and Kelsey Bone.
A team, whose members have previously publicly supported the Black Lives Matter protests to stand against the killing of unarmed black people in this nation by police, made the gesture again in light of this week’s police-action killings of Terrence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Wednesday night home game is a one-and-done game. The winner advances. A win guarantees the socio-politically active Fever play again on the national stage with a retiring star player, Tamika Catchings, in the limelight. A loss could mean more time in the off-season to rally and protest injustice away from media (and fan) scrutiny.
