Nicki Minaj, the reigning queen of rap, recently opened up about her first meeting with Kanye West in an interview with Complex Magazine, sharing some unexpected and humorous insights into their early studio sessions.

The two music icons, who would later collaborate on several tracks, had an encounter that left Minaj with a few shocking memories and an amusing anecdote about the legendary rapper.

According to Minaj, her first interaction with Kanye was sparked by none other than Drake, who had informed her that Kanye wanted her to be a part of his album.

Eager to seize the opportunity, Minaj immediately booked a flight to Hawaii.

However, she was uncertain about how Kanye would react to her presence.

“I didn’t think that he was gonna like me,” Minaj confessed. “I always figured that he was one of those conscious rappers, so I thought that he wouldn’t want girls to be dressed overtly sexy.”

But when Minaj arrived at the studio, she was in for a surprise.

Much to her disbelief, Kanye’s studio was covered in what she described as “artsy” pictures of naked women on his computer.

She was initially taken aback, thinking Kanye’s conscious persona would be at odds with such imagery.

But it didn’t stop there.

As Minaj entered the studio, Kanye, with no hesitation, invited her to look at the images, embracing the nudity without any shame.

This revelation stunned Minaj, as she had misjudged Kanye’s persona entirely.

“It was a complete shock to me, ‘cause I thought I had him all figured out, but I didn’t.”

As if that wasn’t unexpected enough, Minaj also shared an unforgettable moment from their studio sessions.

Kanye was apparently watching porn during their time together.

Minaj explained with a laugh,

“Kanye was watching porn when we were in the studio—no shame in his game.”

Despite her initial surprise, it was clear that Kanye was entirely comfortable in his skin and unapologetic for his actions. This was just the beginning of the unconventional studio experience that Minaj would have with him.

In between creating music, Kanye kept inviting Minaj to join him for breakfast.

However, Minaj was dedicated to her craft and preferred to focus on writing and recording during those early hours.

“I like to record in the morning,”

“I would get to the studio at like 10:30 in the morning and he’d be leaving to go home and eat breakfast, and I’d be getting to the studio to just write and record.”

But Kanye’s persistent breakfast invitations didn’t stop there.

“Yo, why you ain’t never come over for breakfast, yo?”

Despite his repeated requests, Minaj never made it, choosing instead to stay focused on her work.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though.

One of the most embarrassing moments Minaj experienced was when she accidentally fell asleep in the studio.

“I get up at 6 in the morning, so midnight is late for me,”

After a long night of writing and recording, Minaj found herself nodding off during a session.

“One time he caught me nodding off, and I thought maybe he would kick me out,” she said, recalling the discomfort of the situation.

“When I picked up my head from sleeping, he was looking at me in the strangest way I’ve ever been looked at by a human being.”

Kanye’s reaction only added to Minaj’s embarrassment.

With a deadpan expression, he pulled down his sunglasses and, in his signature style, asked,

“Oh, she’s sleeping?”

Minaj was mortified.

“I wanted to crawl under a rock and die,”

she confessed, laughing at the memory.
