BETAwards13Kendrick Lamar and Drake were the big winners at the BET Awards ’13. The rappers each took home three awards at Sunday’s show in Los Angeles.

Drake won Video of the Year as well as the Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award, while Kendrick scored Best Male Hip Hop Artist and Best New Artist.

While accepting his award for Best Male Hip Hop Artist, the Compton MC delivered a heartfelt speech. “If you keep love, God, respect, and hard work in your heart, you can do anything you want in life,” he told the crowd.

Drake was absent, but he showed his appreciation on Twitter. “Thank you to BET and to the fans for voting!” he tweeted. “I’m home finishing the album and spending time w/ family before we begin our journey Sept 17.”

Rihanna took home Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Miguel picked up the award for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, and Nicki Minaj won Best Female Hip Hop Artist for the fourth year in a row.

She shouted out her Barbz while accepting the award. “It’s a humbling experience because my fans are such amazing people. … They inspire me,” said Nicki.

Chris Brown opened the show with a medley of songs and won the Fandemonium Award. “Don’t read the bull in the news, I’m a real dude,” he said.

The 13th annual event featured performances from Mariah Carey, Ciara, R. Kelly, Chris Brown, 2 Chainz, J. Cole, Justin Timberlake, and more.
