Dangerously cold temps lead to school closings, weather advisories
Dangerously cold weather has hit the metro Detroit area with temperatures in the single digits.
In its wake, multiple school closings and weather advisories was issued Wednesday night.
A wind chill advisory is in effect for a plethora of counties around the state, specifically southeast Michigan for another 24 hours. Wind chills will vary from -10 to -30 degrees Wednesday evening through Thursday.
Wednesday night’s low will be 2 degrees, but colder in the suburbs. Snow is expected Thursday night, as many as 2 to 3 inches.
Wayne County leads the way with numerous school closings, including all Detroit Public Schools. Other closings can be found in Macomb, Oakland and Monroe counties, among others.

Pistons win seventh straight game
D.J. Augustin scored 17 of his season-high 26 points in the fourth quarter and the Detroit Pistons won their seventh straight game, 108-95 over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Greg Monroe led the Pistons with 27 points and had 18 rebounds. Brandon Jennings added 14 points, and Jodie Meeks had 11. Andre Drummond had a game-high 19 rebounds for Detroit, which outrebounded the Mavericks 60-43.
The Pistons have the NBA’s longest current winning streak. They were 5-23 before starting the streak Dec. 26.
Pistons were coming off a 105-104 victory Tuesday at San Antonio after trailing by 18 points in the second quarter. . Detroit’s most recent seven-game winning streak had come between Dec. 23, 2008, and Jan. 4, 2009. Five of the games in the current streak have been on the road.

Shoplifting grandmother leads police on high-speed chase
A grandma with sticky fingers and a criminal past is locked up tonight.
Sandra Hasselbach is accused of shoplifting from a Meijer in Lincoln Park, then leading police on a chase with her grandchildren on Dec. 31.
The woman’s two grandchildren rolled out of the moving vehicle, during the chase – which at times included her exceeding 60 miles per hour in a posted 25 mile per hour zone.
“The pursuit went through several residential streets in Lincoln Park,” said Lt. Raymond Watters. “She continued into Wyandotte where she slowed down and the children jumped out the passenger’s rear.”
According to the police report, the incident started when she was accused of stealing Michigan shirts in children’s and women’s sizes as well as toys and other children clothes.
Hasselbach, 49, ran over a Lincoln Park police officer’s foot fleeing the parking lot at Meijer on Dix Road.
She then took off, driving at a “high rate of speed,” Watters said, through stop signs and weaving onto the wrong side of the street.
After slowing down allowing the 8-year-old grandchildren to roll out, the chase continued. She hit a dead end on St. Johns and 8th Street, then got out and tried to run.
After a brief foot chase, Hasselbach was taken into custody by an officer whom she assaulted.
Hasselbach has a record including a suspended license, several retail fraud warrants.
Now she faces charges of retail fraud, child endangerment, fleeing and eluding and assault of a police officer, among others.
Terrance Shullman, who counsels kleptomaniacs, said Hasselbach’s case is extreme.
For somebody like this who is habitual and is putting others in danger physically, this is a different situation,” he said. “I don’t know what can help this woman. It’s really a tragedy, She’s probably going to have to do more hard time.”
Hasselbach remains in jail until her next court date Jan. 13.
The children were not injured, but told police it was okay, because “Grandma steals all the time.”
