Eastern Michigan University to become tobacco-free on July 1

Eastern Michigan University is set to become tobacco-free starting July 1.

The university says the move is to support a healthy learning, living and work environment for all members of the campus community.

The new policy will prohibit all smoking and the use of tobacco products in or on “all university owned, operated or leased buildings, facilities and grounds, including vehicles.”

Turf war brews at old Tiger Stadium site

Five years ago it was a weed-covered abandoned lot at the site of the old Tiger Stadium.

Now, thanks to the volunteers of Navin Field Grounds Crew, the natural turf is maintained and used by baseball players of all generations.

“We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished here. People come from all over the country and all over the world. They see this now as a tourist attraction and not a garbage dump,” said Dave Mesrey, of the Navin Field Grounds Crew.

There is a plan to put in artificial turf on the field which would break ground next spring after the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) takes control of the site. Mesrey has started a petition drive to try to convince PAL to keep the natural grass … click here for more details!

3.3 magnitude earthquake recorded near Battle Creek

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 3.3 magnitude earthquake in Michigan Tuesday morning.

The earthquake happened about 7 miles from Union City. It was was felt in surrounding areas such as Battle Creek, and as far as Kalamazoo.
