Police: Woman Stole Money from New Castle Church, Used it for Gambling
HENRY COUNTY, Ind.–A former New Castle church treasurer is facing five counts of theft.
Police say 42-year-old Amy Nunn stole more than $214,000 over a period of roughly five years while she was the treasurer at Grand Avenue Baptist Church. She started that position in February 2020, but investigators say she wasn’t a suspect until she sent letters to the church in January 2025 admitting that she stole the money.
Nunn admitted to having a “major gambling” problem and that she thought she could just borrow smaller amounts of money and pay it back.
Leaders of the church say they knew something was wrong when tithes that were sent to them weren’t being deposited and their checks were bouncing while their accounts were in the negative.
A New Castle police officer said Nunn had been “the only person who had access to the church’s finances, and that she was the only person to have a debit card and checks for the checking account.” That officer says Nunn got into a gambling debt that got too big for her to get out of.
An initial hearing for Nunn is set for March 27. Nunn resigned from her position. She posted bond and spent some time in the Henry County Jail before being released.
