Former NBA star Paul Pierce is catching heat after making some eyebrow-raising comments about interracial dating on a recent episode of his Truth After Dark podcast.

During a sit-down with his co-host Azar Farideh, the topic came up about why so many NBA players date white women.

Pierce responded, saying, “Because they maybe appreciate more, and they apologize more,” which got some laughs from folks in the room. He followed up with, “They don’t mind being held accountable.”

As expected, the internet was quick to react.

The conversation echoed a previous moment from the same podcast when actor Columbus Short made similarly controversial remarks, claiming Black women “don’t respect the Black man.”

That comment went viral and led to major backlash, pushing Short to issue a public apology. “That clip was taken out of context… I seriously offended Black women in a way that was not intended,” he said at the time.

Now, Paul Pierce’s comments are being criticized for playing into harmful stereotypes and continuing a pattern of blaming Black women while uplifting non-Black women for basic relationship behavior.

The reactions on social media have been swift, with many calling on Pierce to clarify or walk back his remarks, especially given the long-standing history of Black women being undervalued — even by the men they often ride for the hardest.

While Pierce hasn’t responded to the backlash yet, the moment has reopened larger conversations in the community about internalized bias, how we show up for each other in relationships, and the responsibility Black public figures have when speaking on love, race, and respect in the public eye.
