“Barbershop” TV Series With Jermaine Fowler Set For Amazon

According to Variety, a television series based on the popular Barbershop movie franchise has been given the green light at Amazon and will air on its Prime Video platform. Veteran actor Jermaine Fowler has been tapped to star in the series, which will be written and executively produced by Marshall Todd, who served as the original Barbershop film’s co-writer.
The series was first proposed at Amazon in 2023, just after the company’s acquisition of MGM. In the official description presented to advertisers at Amazon’s upfront meetings on Monday night (May 12) in New York City, the show “revolves around Travis ‘Trav’ Porter (Fowler), who endeavors to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, a legendary barber at the iconic ‘Calvin’s’ barbershop in Chicago. And while the barbers are new, the shop remains just as lively, the customers just as argumentative, and the fades are still the dopest in the city — because at Calvin’s, the community comes together for way more than just a haircut.”
Amazon MGM Studios will be the main producer, along with Todd. Max Searles will be a co-showrunner and producer with Todd as well. Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, and Mike Stein will also serve as executive producers through Heartbeat Productions in tandem with George L. Tillman and Robert Teitel of State Street Pictures, and Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford of Prominent Productions.
“We are thrilled to announce a new series based on the hilarious and innovative world of ‘Barbershop’ for our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “The television adaptation of this iconic film franchise is in excellent hands with co-showrunners Max Searle and Marshall Todd. We couldn’t be happier with their collaboration and hard work to bring Calvin’s Chicago-based barbershop to life for a new audience on Prime Video.”
For Fowler, this series marks his second for the upcoming slate of shows making their debut. He’s also set to star in Crutch with Tracy Morgan and Erika L. Alexander, airing on Paramount+, and will have a role in the fifth season of Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building. The accomplished stand-up comedian has also starred in Sorry To Bother You, Coming 2 America, and Judas and The Black Messiah.
