INDIANAPOLIS — You may remember the woman who was shot and killed Thursday morning on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Police also later shot a man they fired at them during a chase.

It turns out the man was a convicted felon with a criminal history.

76-year-old Walter McNary was chased by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Officers tried to pull him over for shooting his wife, Nola.

Over a decade ago, McNary faced arrest for violating probation tied to drug offenses. He was released right before Christmas in 2011.

Court documents say McNary woke up Nola at 4 a.m. in May 2012. He hit her, choked her, and threatened to kill her.

McNary accepted a plea deal, resulting in probation and a requirement to complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling.

13 years later, McNary shot Nola on North Ritter Avenue before 7:30 a.m. Thursday. She was taken to a hospital, she was in critical condition, but she later died.

Officers chased after McNary shortly after the shooting. When he got out of the car, he fired at officers, who then returned fire.

Nola’s friend, Monica, expressed her shock at the unexpected loss and urged anyone witnessing signs of a domestic dispute to seek safety immediately.
