The Squid Game franchise is showing no signs of slowing down. After captivating the world with its dark, high-stakes survival drama, Netflix is now expanding the universe with a spin-off series, Squid Game America.
With Mindhunter director David Fincher behind the camera and Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk still closely involved, this new chapter promises to bring fresh twists to the deadly competition that made the original so popular.

An American Twist on the Deadly Games
While the original Squid Game shocked audiences with its grim portrayal of South Korea’s brutal competition, Squid Game America is poised to bring the same shocking stakes to the U.S.
Rather than just replicate the original, the American version will be a unique reimagining. The deadly childhood games will remain at the heart of the series, but they will be updated and adapted to suit the American cultural context.
Expect new challenges, new players, and, of course, even higher stakes.

One of the key elements that made Squid Game so captivating was the mix of familiar childhood games and high-tension life-or-death stakes.
In the American spin-off, it’s likely that we’ll see some of those same childhood games make a return, but with an added twist to keep things fresh.
Fans can anticipate a combination of new challenges as well as familiar favorites—reworked to test the limits of American contestants in ways we haven’t seen before.
Possible Childhood Games to Appear in Squid Game America
- Red Light, Green Light
The terrifying giant doll from the original Squid Game is arguably one of the most iconic images from the series.
In Squid Game America, this childhood game will likely make a return, but with an American spin. Instead of the doll, the game could feature a new “robot” or mechanical figure, possibly resembling a more sinister figure from American pop culture. Contestants will once again have to freeze when the “red light” hits—failure to do so could cost them their life.
- Tug of War
In Squid Game’s tug-of-war challenge, teams of players battled it out in a deadly competition where the losing team was sent to their doom. While the American version may keep the general concept of the game intact, expect to see a larger-scale setup. Maybe the teams will face off on top of elevated platforms or over giant pits. The game could also feature different variations, like multiple teams competing in a bracket-style tournament, adding even more excitement.
- Marbles
In the original series, marbles became a heartbreaking challenge, where players had to use strategy and deception to win. The American version could keep the essence of this game but change how it’s played. For example, marbles could be replaced with another game that involves strategy, perhaps something unique to American childhood culture, like “Bingo” or even “Spinning Top” competitions, but with deadly consequences for the losers.
- Hopscotch
This is another classic childhood game that could make a chilling return in the American version. However, expect a darker twist on this simple playground activity. Instead of chalk drawings on the ground, the game could take place on a dangerous, unstable surface, with each jump causing the floor to crack or shift. Players could fall through the cracks, or they could be eliminated if they take the wrong steps. The stakes would be high, and the tension would be unbearable.
- Hide and Seek
The simplicity of hide and seek could be escalated to terrifying levels in Squid Game America. The game could take place in a massive, maze-like environment where contestants hide to avoid being “caught” by a terrifying figure or automated security force. Unlike the original series, where the “seeker” was human, the American version could introduce a mechanized or AI-driven seeker that adds another layer of unpredictability to the game. The contestants’ ability to think strategically and move silently would be key to their survival.
- Lemonade Stand
One potential new addition to the Squid Game America could be a twist on classic playground games, such as a competition modeled on “lemonade stand” challenges, where players must sell or make their product under extreme pressure. However, this version would take the stakes much higher, introducing moral dilemmas—such as contestants being forced to steal from others, lie, or sabotage their peers in order to win.

The Dark World of Squid Game America
One of the core draws of Squid Game was its exploration of society’s inequalities and the lengths people will go to for a chance at money and redemption.
Squid Game America will likely continue this commentary, but with a different lens. The cultural shift could mean that contestants are motivated by the pressures unique to American society—debt, personal loss, or economic hardship.
These factors will only add to the intense dynamics of the games, making each contestant’s decisions even more morally complex.

The American version may also introduce new ways to interact with the games themselves. While the original series was focused on individual survival, there’s potential for Squid Game America to incorporate team dynamics, alliances, and betrayals more prominently.
Expect a greater focus on strategy and manipulation, especially as contestants attempt to outsmart not only each other but also the organizers behind the games.

The Expansion of the Squid Game Universe
Aside from the Squid Game America spin-off, Netflix has already dipped its toes into expanding the franchise.
In 2023, Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition series inspired by the drama, became a hit with viewers.
While it didn’t feature life-or-death stakes, the show allowed 456 real contestants to play versions of Squid Game’s games for a huge cash prize. The reality series proved there’s a deep interest in the Squid Game concept, even when the risk isn’t literal.
Now, with Squid Game America, Netflix is diving even deeper into the world of Squid Game, creating a space for both scripted drama and reality competition to thrive.
