One Kendrick Verse Reportedly Got Clipse Dropped From Def Jam — Here’s Why

The streets been waiting on that Clipse comeback — but industry drama nearly shut it down.
According to a recent GQ interview, Pusha T revealed that Def Jam Records dropped Clipse after refusing to censor a Kendrick Lamar feature on their upcoming album Let God Sort Em Out.
The verse in question? From the track “Chains & Whips”, where Kendrick apparently came with heat the label wasn’t ready for.
“They wanted me to ask Kendrick to clean up his verse. I was never doing that,” said Pusha.
That refusal kicked off a standoff with Def Jam that reportedly lasted a month. Eventually, their legal team came back with a decision: if Clipse wouldn’t change the verse, they were off the label. Simple as that.
There’s more to it than just a verse. The industry tea is that both Kendrick and Clipse — especially Pusha T — have well-known tension with Drake. And right now, Drake is in the middle of a massive legal fight with Universal Music Group, Def Jam’s parent company.
So when the label saw two of Drake’s biggest rap rivals linking up on a track during a lawsuit… they got nervous. Allegedly, the optics didn’t sit right with the higher-ups.
Rather than bow to label politics, Clipse chose to walk away. Pusha made sure the group was fully released and able to take their talents elsewhere. Now, the reunion album is back on track — this time under Roc Nation.
Def Jam and UMG haven’t said a word publicly about the situation. But make no mistake: this move sends a loud message. Clipse isn’t playing industry games — especially when it comes to artistic freedom and authenticity.
This is just the latest chapter in Pusha T’s long-standing beef with Drake — a rivalry that changed the game in 2018 when Pusha dropped The Story of Adidon and revealed Drake’s secret son. That track made Hip-Hop history and showed Pusha doesn’t pull punches — on or off the mic.
Now, as Clipse prepares to drop their long-awaited reunion album, they’re doubling down on the one thing that’s always set them apart: unapologetic bars and uncompromised art.
Stay tuned. The album’s coming — and if Kendrick’s verse is what got them dropped, imagine what else is on it.
