Kyrie Irving Donates $50,000 to Tamir Rice Foundation in Honor of What Would’ve Been His 23rd Birthday

NBA star Kyrie Irving is once again using his platform and wealth to support social justice causes—this time with a generous $50,000 donation to the Tamir Rice Foundation.

The foundation was created by Samaria Rice, the mother of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy tragically killed by Cleveland police in 2014 while holding a toy gun.

As Tamir’s 23rd birthday approached, Samaria launched a GoFundMe campaign to honor his memory and raise funds for a new community center dedicated to empowering inner-city youth through arts and culture.

In the fundraiser, Samaria invited supporters to donate $23 in memory of the 23 years her son never got to live.

“I miss my son so much each and every day,” she wrote. “I purchased a building in the city of Cleveland to give back to our inner-city youth with art and cultural developments.”

Since launching the campaign on June 9, the fundraiser has seen contributions from over 1,180 donors.

But it received a major boost when Kyrie Irving added $50,000 to the effort on June 25, helping push the campaign well past the $85,000 mark toward its $110,000 goal.

Irving has long been vocal and active in supporting causes rooted in social justice, community development, and mental health.

His latest donation is a continuation of that mission, ensuring that Tamir’s legacy lives on in a way that uplifts others.

The timing comes as Irving reportedly prepares to sign a three-year, $119 million contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks after opting out of his current deal.

Although the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals this past season, they fell to the Boston Celtics.

Irving is currently recovering from an ACL injury and is expected to miss the start of the upcoming season.

Still, even while sidelined, Kyrie continues to make an impact—this time, off the court and straight from the heart.
