PERU, Ind.–Officers with five different law enforcement agencies in Indiana arrested 68 people on 163 criminal charges in the middle of June during what they called “Operation Blue Thunder.”

“The goal of Operation Blue Thunder was to enforce traffic laws and catch individuals who use Indiana roadways to distribute illegal narcotics,” said State Police Sergeant Steven Glass on Monday.

Glass says they used both marked and unmarked police cars to conduct saturation patrols on U.S. 31 in Miami and Fulton Counties from June 16 through June 19.

“U.S. 31 was chosen because a large volume of motorists use this roadway to travel through the heart of northern Indiana. Officers teamed up to make 68 criminal arrests on 163 mostly drug-related charges. Twenty-nine of the charges were felonies. Officers also issued 102 traffic citations and 272 written warnings. There were also two impaired driving arrests. During the four days, officers located cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, edible marijuana food, MDMA, THC oil, ketamine, prescription medications, syringes, and drug paraphernalia. Officers also seized two firearms,” Glass continued.

Glass says this is the 13th year that they have organized a summer driving season kickoff patrol.

Officers from the Indiana State Police, Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, Wabash Police Department, and the Rochester Police Department took part in “Operation Blue Thunder.”
