Mike Epps Free Concert At Near Northeast Side Park (RECAP)
On Saturday, September 7, Mike Epps brought a free concert to Frederick Douglass Park on the near northeast side of Indianapolis. From 2-6 p.m., the Mike Epps’ Community Concert provided an afternoon of entertainment while spotlighting the crucial role of art and culture in enhancing mental health and wellbeing, particularly within the Black community.
The event featured performances by Stokely, formerly of Mint Condition; Donell Jones; and Full Force.
In the lead-up to the event, Epps discussed his motivations during an interview with Karen Vaughn. He shared his vision for the concert, emphasizing his commitment to raising the city’s spirits and addressing its ongoing challenges.
“I wanted to bring some joy and lift the morale of the community,” Epps explained. His deep connection to Indianapolis, where he grew up, has always driven his desire to give back.

Epps acknowledged the city’s issues, including crime and youth disengagement.
“I think a lot of our children are bored and lack constructive activities. It’s crucial for city leaders and community members to come together and create opportunities for them,” he said.
His goal with the concert was to provide a creative and uplifting experience for families, while imparting a message of self-love and aspiration.
Reflecting on his own upbringing in Indianapolis, Epps spoke about the challenges he faced and how they shaped his character.
“I come from a tough background, and it’s important for me to help others who are struggling,” he said.
The event also included food trucks, a vendor village, and various health services such as dental care and vaccinations. Epps hopes to make this community concert an annual tradition, continuing to support and uplift his hometown.
