The Alliance of Responsible Alcohol Retailers launched a statewide campaign Monday to update to what they are calling Indiana’s out-of-date alcohol laws.

The group is calling for Sunday carryout sales and cold beer sales to be allowed at convenience, drug and grocery stores.

At a morning press conference today at a Northeastside supermarket, representatives from the Indiana Retain Council and Kroger grocery stores and state Sen. Phil Boots, R-Crawfordsville, formally announced the campaign called “Change It!”

Boots said he will propose a bill to allow Sunday alcohol sales and cold-beer sales in grocery and convenience stores in the next legislative session.

“These laws have little base in policy and are in large part meant to protect one segment of our retail industry,” liquor store owners, Boots said.

The group said about $9 million in tax revenue is lost each year to alcohol sales in neighboring states.

Grant M. Monahan, president of Indiana Retail Council, said, “As a society, we operate under a free-market economy, yet when it comes to Indiana’s liquor laws, protecting the special interests of liquor store owners comes first.”
